Welcome to the 33rd Season...

As the Executive and Artistic Director and on behalf of the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre’s board of directors, it is my privilege to present this new season on Treaty 8 and 11 territories.
We are dedicating the 2017-2018 season to the Eclipse and we will be exploring the arts through social engagement. This is with the help of a lineup of world-class artists who will burrow deeply into our imaginations and interrogate the boundaries we construct in our lives between reality and creativity.
An Eclipse is about two forces meeting, creating a powerful image that has always inspired. In the same way, our 2017-2018 season will be powerful and inspire the imagination, allowing our audiences to experience within a single night opposite emotions going from happiness to sadness. The content of each show will likely move through stages of hope and fear, love and rejection, dreams and ideals, longing for a blissful state of mind or a place to reveal themselves. An Eclipse is also the shape of a circle, which, in many cultures, symbolizes sharing, a timely reminder as Canada’s 150th anniversary takes place in a period of reconciliation with the people who have lived on this land for thousands of years prior. It cannot be denied a lack of cultural understanding has plagued this country for the last century and a half, and the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre aims to do its part to bridge that gap.
With this 2017-2018 season, we hope to embrace a Northern aesthetic, encourage Northern participation and bring about a strong sense of Northern community. We hope to become challenged by and immersed within a world of high-scale artists on stage. Through theatre, music, multimedia, dance and spoken word performances, we aim to redistribute the past into the present by negotiating ideas of real versus preconceived perceptions of many themes related to our 2017 reality. The Northern Arts and Cultural Centre has implemented a large range of programming throughout the Northwest Territories and we invite you to take part in our season shows, special shows, festivals, Northern Scene series, monthly arts exhibitions, community group performances, pre-concerts and outreach projects.
Thank you to the patrons, colleagues, board members, volunteers, partners and funders who make it a huge part of the success. You are the key of this organization and it is an honour to work for you.
We hope you will find the season insightful, poignant, hilarious and artistically engaging.
